Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common prepaid meter questions.
Tokens can be purchased at your municipal office, authorized retail shops, via online banking (FNB, Standard Bank, Absa, Nedbank), or through your municipality’s website or mobile app.
Press any button on the meter keypad to wake the display. The screen shows your remaining credit in kWh. Some meters cycle through additional information such as total usage and power readings.
A Key Change Token (KCT) is a special token required when your meter has been replaced, you’ve moved to a new property with an existing meter, or after certain municipal system updates. It must be entered BEFORE any purchase tokens.
Common reasons include: entering digits incorrectly, the token has already been used, your meter needs a Key Change Token, or the meter is not configured for your municipality’s vending system. Double-check the 20 digits and try again.
A negative number on your meter display means you are in emergency credit or debt. When you purchase your next token, the debt amount will be deducted before the remaining credit is loaded.
A single beep after loading a token confirms acceptance. Continuous beeping usually means your credit is very low or zero. Purchase a token to stop the alarm, or press any key to reset it after loading credit.
If the display shows ‘SUPPLY OFF’, press and hold the keypad button for 3–5 seconds to reconnect. Some meters have a dedicated reconnect sequence — consult your meter’s user guide.
Contact your local municipality’s metering or prepaid vending department. Hexing manufactures the meters, but municipalities manage the vending systems and token distribution.
